Eureka Ridge:
Just passed the locked gate, the road emerges from the trees.
As the road goes down Eureka Ridge,
it gets steeper and rockier.
One of the real hazards along this trail are the "bowling ball" size rocks that lie hidden in the deep green grass of
spring. Combine them with too much speed and you have a recipe for the
famous "Chinese Wheelie"!
"This picture looks down into the Snake
River Gorge about 3000 feet below. The drainage is Eureka Creek and it
contains a cabin and some of the best groves of Poison Oak in the
world.
Last August, a major fire started about 10 miles north of
here and burned an area of about 80 square miles. If the fire got into this canyon it would
certainly have destroyed the cabin and hopefully the poison oak!
Do not undertake this trip without proper equipment and planning. Mistakes,
breakdowns or poor map reading skills could make this trip miserable
or worse.
