Buckhorn Overlook
The first 6 miles of trail is a thrilling 4100' drop
from the cool forests of Buckhorn Overlook into the
abyss of the Snake River Gorge. The trail is really an old wagon road
that is restricted to hiking, bicycling and horses by the USFS.
Buckhorn Overlook is a spectacular view of six knife edge ridges that streak down into the
Imnaha River Gorge.
To get here, drive 41 miles north on forest road #46 out
of Enterprise, Oregon. Purchase "Hells Canyon National
Recreation Area Map" from the Forest Service at 541-426-5546 for
$4.00 + postage. The map is a wealth of information and one of the best values
in government maps because it is contoured!
There is a campground a mile from Buckhorn Overlook
which has its own natural cold water spring that bubbles right out of the
ground. It is some of the best and coldest water this "hiker"
has ever filtered!
